Staff Project Engineer
I might be testing vehicles in the San Francisco Bay or traveling to the Caribbean to service USVs that have been on mission for months. That variety is a big part of what makes the work so engaging. The role can move quickly from technical troubleshooting to field operations to customer collaboration. Each day brings a different challenge.
The ocean is arguably one of the harshest environments for technology. Building vehicles that can survive at sea, operate for months at a time, and deliver data from remote parts of the world is an incredibly difficult engineering problem. That challenge was very exciting to me, and it made Saildrone feel like a place where I could work on something truly meaningful and technically ambitious.
My favorite mission has been the ocean mapping project in the Cayman Islands Exclusive Economic Zone. The Cayman Islands became the first country in the Caribbean to have its entire EEZ mapped, and it was made possible by the Saildrone Surveyor and years of hard work by the team. It was exciting to be part of a mission showing how unmanned systems can help countries better understand and manage their ocean territories.
Saildrone has given me incredible opportunities to travel. I’ve been to four continents and more than 30 countries, supporting missions, learning from field operations, and seeing firsthand how our vehicles perform in different environments around the world.
There’s a strong problem-solving culture here. People care about the mission, they want the vehicles to perform well, and they take pride in their work. It creates an environment where you’re surrounded by people who are curious, capable, and motivated to tackle hard problems.
We’re constantly learning how to make saildrones more reliable, more capable, and more resilient. That feedback loop—seeing what happens in the real world and then using it to improve our systems—keeps the work interesting and motivating.
The core of the work has stayed the same: making sure Saildrone delivers for our customers. But the scale has changed dramatically. What started as hands-on learning in the field has grown into leading complex programs and helping develop the next generation of Saildrone vehicles. That progression has been one of the most rewarding parts of my time here.
